编辑源自中古英语 Temese，源自古英语 Temes、Temese（对比威尔士语 Tafwys），源自拉丁语 Tamesis、Tamesas[1]。带 h 的异体拼写起于中古英语，是受词源来自希腊语的错误认识所影响。[2]
拉丁语名称来自原始凯尔特语 *tamesās (“河，水流”, 字面意思是“黑暗”)，*tames 的阳性 ā-词干形式[3]，源自原始印欧语 *tm̥Hes-，*témHes-、*témHos- (“黑暗”) 的零阶形式，来自词根 *temH- (“黑暗的”) 的 s-词干形式。与原始凯尔特语 *temeslos (“黑暗”)、*temos (“黑暗的”)有关。原始凯尔特语中“黑暗（的）”比喻作“水”的现象也见于原始凯尔特语 *dubros (“水；黑暗的”)，源自原始印欧语 *dʰubrós (“黑暗的”)，其也是威尔士语 dŵr (“水”)、爱尔兰语 dobhar (“水，海；黑暗的，阴暗的”)的源头。类似的水体名称也见于欧洲其他地方，如葡萄牙的杜罗河（Douro）。
